Back Home to Hawai’i
“Back Home to Hawai’i”
by Nicole Costa
Tonight I lay me down
I close my eyes
Underneath the moon
And these metal skies
I pray for truth
May she hear my cries
This is my lullaby
This is the people’s cry
May freedom ring
Emancipate my soul
This song I sing
Freedom isn’t free
It cost a price
Lives laid down in sacrifice
Tonight I lay down my life
A living sacrifice
May the ancestors
Hear my prayers
Hear my cries
All those before me
That gave up their lives
This is the place for punishment
They tell me
All throughout history
They say there’s nothing I can do
So I pour my soul out to you
Oh Luna, set me free
Bring the needed clarity
I’ve done my time
For crimes
I did not commit
Oh, but the punishment
It just won’t quit
Neither will I
This heart of mine
Refuses to die
You can’t kill my song
You can’t make me wrong
In the sight of one
Who sees it all
My joy, my heart, my cup
Fill me up Creator
Protect me from the hater
You can’t steal my crown
You can’t bring me down
In the eyes of my Creator
There is no repentance
For a lesser sentence
My innocence will prevail
These tears have already set sail
Back home to Hawai’i
