The Gift of Life
“The Gift of Life”
by Nicole Costa
The bleeding
Woman
Moans and sighs
From her travail
Out through
Her thighs
A new
Born baby
Begins to cry
Drying up
The tears
From her eyes
Gratitude
Through
Pain and strife
Blessed
She is given
The gift of life
Oh little child
I’ve waited
Your arrival
Through
Time and space
Multiple survivals
Attacks from
And
Victories
Over rivals
Here we are
At last
A breakthrough
Reborn
From the past
Someday
Child
You’ll understand
But for now
Come take me
By the hand
As I lead
And guide
I don’t have much
To offer
That’s tangible
Just me
By your side
And
The promise
That you’ll never
Have to run
Nor
Will you hide
You will walk
With your head
Up high
With Mother Earth
And
Father sky
A steward
Of
The land
And
The people
With both roots
And
Wings to fly
And
I’ll sing to you
As you fall asleep
Each night
A lullaby
I’ll be there
Every morning
When
You open up
Your eyes
To comfort you
And
Kiss your face
Before the sun
Begins its rise
